What it is
Not the fossil resin, which has almost no smell. As a note it is an accord in miniature, built from labdanum, benzoin and vanilla, and the name has been used this way since the nineteenth century.

A soft resinous warmth that sits close and glows rather than projects. It fills the space between the sharp opening and the woods underneath, and a fragrance with amber in the base almost always reads as warmer than its note list suggests.
